Two Pieces for Viola and Piano by Frank Bridge

Published by Stainer and Bell

Frank Bridge (1879-1941) was a notable English composer and violist. His early works from the Edwardian period are lyrical and melodic, with touches of impressionism. After the First World War, his language became more modernist and complex. He was also a notable teacher, whose most famous student was Benjamin Britten.

Bridge wrote many excellent chamber works for strings; his earlier works in this genre rank as some of the most warm and charming of the time. Though he was a violist, he didn't write as much for his instrument as he did for violin or cello. What he did write is of high quality, capturing the character of the viola in both the veiled lower timbres and more strident upper registers of the instrument. Pensiero is elegiac, restrained, and highly detailed. Allegro Appassionato is exuberant and expansive. Intermediate-advanced level, Grade 4.
