Lament for Two Violas by Frank Bridge

Edited by Paul Hindmarsh. Published by Thames Publishing

Frank Bridge (1879-1941) was a notable English composer and violist. His early works from the Edwardian period are lyrical and melodic, with touches of impressionism. After the First World War, his language became more modernist and complex. He was also a notable teacher, whose most famous student was Benjamin Britten.

Bridge wrote many excellent chamber works for strings; his earlier works in this genre rank as some of the most warm and charming of the time. He wrote his Lament for two violas in 1912, for himself and Lionel Tertis to play at a Wigmore Hall concert. It is a short but substantial entry into the small viola duo repertory. This Thames Publishing edition is based on a near complete, but untitled, draft and other sketches. Presented as a single score for both violists. Master level, Grade 6.
