Published by E.C. Schirmer
Elena Ruehr (b 1963) is a Cambridge-based American compooser. She studied with William Bolcom and Vincent Persichetti and has taught at MIT since 1991. She finds inspiration from a number of sources, from dance and visual art to poetry and literature. Her music is often colorful, energetic, and communicative.
Ruehr's ''Equality, Justice, Freedom (or lack thereof...)'' (2021) is a piano sextet for two violins, viola, cello, bass, and piano. She writes: ''I wrote this three movement work considering the emotions that are evoked by lack of equality (anger and frustration), seeking justice (which can be a hard path), and valuing freedom (honoring ourselves and our history). Because of the subject, I decided to have an instrument that usually plays a supporting role, the bass, become the main focus.'' Includes parts and full score. Intermediate-advanced level, Grade 4.
MOVEMENTS:
- I. Inequality
- II. Seeking Justice
- III. Valuing Freedom
