Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) was one of the most prominent composers of the Classical period and is often considered one of the greatest composers of Western art music. A noted child prodigy, he excelled in all genres. His music is revered for its beauty, clarity, balance, and transparency, underpinned by sophisticated craftsmanship.
Mozart wrote his Piano Quartet No. 1 in G minor, K.478 (1785) as part of a three-work commission from publisher Franz Anton Hoffmeister. It proved to be a departure from Mozart's other chamber works up to that point in its drama, complexity, and demands on the players; as such, Hoffmeister ended the commission, fearing the public would reject it. Mozart went on to write only one more piano quartet, No. 2 in E-flat Major, K.493. Since then, Hoffmeister has proven to be wrong, as they are both regarded as masterpieces and are among Mozart's most beloved chamber works.
