Sofia Gubaidulina (1931--) is the foremost Russian composer of the late twentieth century and beyond. Her reverence of J.S. Bach and Anton Webern is apparent in her music, which pursues transcendent spiritual mysticism and avant-garde experimentation.
Her ''Quasi Hoquetus'' (1984) was originally written for viola, bassoon and piano and is presented here in a version for viola, douible bass, and piano. It shows her experimenting with form and rhythmic patterns in an improvistory style. Irregular meter and special timbral effects abound, showcasing her skill and attention to detail in instrumental writing. Includes piano score and pull-out parts for viola and bass. For advanced players.
