Eight Duets, Op.39 for violin and cello by Reinhold Gliere

Published by International

Reinhold Gliere (1875-1956) was a Russian composer. A student of Taneyev and Hrimaly and a teacher of Prokofiev, he was inspired by the folk-oriented music of Rimsky-Korsakov and Ippolitov-Ivanov. Though he incorporated modern developments into his work, it was still thoroughly rooted in romanticism. As such, he was left relatively unscathed under the Soviet Regime (unlike many compatriots), which saw him as the last representative of the pre-revolutionary nationalist Russian composers. Though most remembered for his epic third symphony, he left a respectable and popular body of chamber music.

Gliere's Eight Duets for Violin and Cello, Op.39 (1909) are still popular today. It is light but substantial music, placing considerable though fulfilling demands on both instruments and taking listeners thru short movements of passion, mystery, and exuberance. Includes two performance parts. Advanced level, Grade 5.
