String Quartets Nos. 1-6, Op.18 (parts) by Ludwig van Beethoven

Edited by Paul Mies, with a preface by Ernst Herttrich. Published by Henle

Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) was the most influential and admired composer of the Romantic Era, and is considered today to be among the greatest composers of classical music to ever live. His music is known variously for its compositional rigor, sublime beauty, organic development, gripping urgency, and life-affirming, universal humanism. He left a significant mark on almost every classical genre he worked in, from string quartets to symphonies.

  • Beethoven's cycle of sixteen string quartets spans his entire compositional career and is often considered to be the most significant ever composed, guiding the form from its classical beginnings thru the freer expression of the Romantic Era and even pointing to developments far in the future. His Op.18 quartets, the first six he composed, date from 1798-1800. They are classical in conception and contain discernable influences from Mozart, yet they show Romantic Era pathways for the genre and are unmistakably Beethoven. This Henle urtext edition draws from important, recently unearthed manuscripts with richer dynamics and articulations, the only edition to do so. In addition to the Op.18, it also includes Beethoven's own string quartet arrangement of his Piano Sonata in F Major, Op.14/1 from the same time. Edited by Paul Mies, with a preface by Ernst Herttrich. Parts only. Advanced level, grade 5.
