String Quintets by Ludwig van Beethoven

Published by C.F. Peters

Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) was the most influential and admired composer of the Romantic Era, and is considered today to be among the greatest composers of classical music to ever live. His music is known variously for its compositional rigor, sublime beauty, organic development, gripping urgency, and life-affirming, universal humanism. He left a significant mark on almost every classical genre he worked in, from string quartets to symphonies.

Beethoven's string quintets for two violins, two violas, and cello are the best kept secrets in Beethoven's chamber oeuvre. Of the four quintets, only Op.29 was fully an original, large-scale composition, a startlingly bold and significant work comparable to his string quartets. The Op.4 is a reworking of his Octet for Winds, Op.103; Op.104 is an arrangement of the earlier piano trio Op.1/3, and the fugue, Op.137 is a short work in the academic form. Parts only. Advanced level, grade 5.
