Piano Quartets, urtext by Ludwig van Beethoven

Edited by Siegfried Kross. Published by Henle

Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) was the most influential and admired composer of the Romantic Era, and is considered today to be among the greatest composers of classical music to ever live. His music is known variously for its compositional rigor, sublime beauty, organic development, gripping urgency, and life-affirming, universal humanism. He left a significant mark on almost every classical genre he worked in, from string quartets to symphonies.

Beethoven only wrote four piano quartets (compared to his 16 string quartets and 13 piano trios); though the lie in the margins of his chamber music, they are among the most popular of the genre. Three of them, the quartets WoO 36, are early pieces that show a strong Mozartian influence, they are already and unmistakably typical Beethoven. His esteem for these piece are apparent in the reworking of some material in his first piano sonata. The fourth quartet represents another version of the Wind Quintet op. 16. This urtext Henle edition of all four quartets is edited by Siegfried Kross. Includes parts for violin, viola, and cello, as well as a piano score. Advanced level, grade 5.
