Sonata for cello and piano by Francis Poulenc

Published by Leduc

Francis Poulenc (1899-1963) was a French composer, known for his fresh, appealing melodicism. Consciously conservative in his approach to tonality, he nevertheless found individuality in his diatonic language, writing both serious and humorous, irreverent works. His Cello Sonata (1948) is considered the best of his two string sonatas (he wrote many for wind instruments). Dedicated to cellist Pierre Fournier, it is a weighty but beautiful work, with a sparkling Cavatina at its center. Master level, Grade 6.
