Sonata in G minor "Devil's Trill" for violin and piano by Giuseppe Tartini

Transcribed by Fritz Kreisler. Published by International.

Giuseppe Tartini (1692-1770) was a prominent Italian composer, violinist, and teacher of the Baroque era. He was also a noted music theorist, as well as one of the earliest scholars of acoustics, writing and publishing several treatises in his lifetime. Most of his compositions were violin sonatas and concertos.

Tartini is perhaps most famous for his "Devil's Trill" Sonata in G minor. Tartini allegedly transcribed it from a dream in which the devil played violin for him. This is recreated most vividly in the last movement, where the theme is played in trills above arpeggiated triads. First written for violin and basso continuo, this edition presents the popular transcription for violin and piano by Fritz Kreisler. Advanced level, Grade 5.
