15 Selected Exercises from 30 Progressive Exercises, Op.38 for violin (with 2nd violin accompaniment) by Jakob Dont

Published by International Edition. edited by Tyrone Greive

Jakob Dont (1815-88) was a noted violinist and composer in Vienna, but is best known today as one of the foremost violin pedagogues of the 19th century. Among his students at the Vienna Conservatory was Leopold Auer, who in turn taught Heifetz, Elman, and Milstein. His best known exercises are his 24 Etudes and Caprices, Op.35--preparatory to the Paganini Caprices and other virtuoso literature--and his 24 Studies, Op.37--preparatory to the Kreutzer and Rode studies.

By comparison, Dont's Thirty Progressive Exercises, Op.38 offer a more intermediate level, systematic, and more outright musical approach to technique to prepare the student for advanced studies, not unlike Kayser's Etudes, Op.20. Dont's Op.38 also includes a second violin part, playable by teacher or student, that enriches the musicianship thru a variety of harmonic, rhythmic, articulative, and textural interactions. Technical issues covered include building of left-hand strength and stamina, chromaticism, string crossings, and martele and spiccato bowing. This new, updated International Edition edited by Tyrone Greive brings together 15 important exercies from this collection, retaining the progessive order of difficulty abut also including a variety of new fingering suggestions and corrections of errors from the older Schirmer publication. Includes two performing parts.
