Jay Haide Montagnana Model Cello

Montagnana Model

The Jay Haide Modèle artistique à l'ancienne family of instruments was developed over many years of collaboration between makers Jay Ifshin and Haide Lin, who studied the fine varnish techniques of master European luthiers. The distinctive appearance of these instruments is achieved by artful shading and antiquing of the specially formulated varnish to give each instrument the patina of age, so desired by both musicians and connoisseurs.

The Montagnana model is the same width across the lower bouts as the Ruggieri cello, but is also even larger in the middle and upper bouts. We do not usually recommend this model for petite players, as the upper bouts can be harder to get around for shorter arms. This bigger model produces the deepest sound of the three cello models, and tends to be very mellow, though still with plenty of projection.

Meticulous attention has been paid to scroll and f-hole carving, top and back archings, and wear patterns of the varnish.

The instruments have a remarkably mature, rich sound for their price range. The JSI workshop fits high quality ebony pegs and a fingerboard planed for proper scoop, a Despiau "Superieur" bridge, the lightweight Wittner tailpiece with four built-in fine tuners, Larsen A & D strings and Spirocore tungsten G & C strings, and a smooth-operating, high quality endpin.

The distinctive appearance of these instruments is achieved by artful shading and antiquing of the specially formulated varnish to give each instrument the patina of age, so desired by both musicians and connoisseurs.

The Ruggieri model is wider across the lower bouts and the upper bouts than the Strad model. It flares a bit more at the corners, resulting in a curvier look. Because of the the wider bouts, the Ruggieri adds more of the deeper tones to the power of the Strad model, rounding out the sound.

Meticulous attention has been paid to scroll and f-hole carving, top and back archings, and wear patterns of the varnish.

The Stradivarius, or "Strad", model is the most ubiquitous model used in the violin-making world. Most commercial cellos and many personal cellos follow a version of a Strad pattern. It is the thinnest of the three models, and tends to encourage a sweet and powerful sound.

Meticulous attention has been paid to scroll and f-hole carving, top and back archings, and wear patterns of the varnish.
