In Kyu Hwang
Restoration Manager

In Kyu Hwang discovered his love of violin making while growing up in South Korea after watching a documentary about the school in Mirecourt, France. In 1998, he began his first internship with Hye Dyung Kim at his workshop in Kwangju, Korea. He went on to study at the prestigious Violin Making School in Mittenwald, Germany.

Upon graduation in 2007, In Kyu began work as a restorer at the workshop of Anton Pilar in Berlin, Germany under the direction of Andreas von Niederhäusern. There he specialized in repair and restoration, including the instruments of musicians in the Berlin Philharmonic. He earned the esteemed Geigenbaumeister (Master Craftsman) Certification in Violin Making in 2010.

In Kyu moved to Los Angeles in 2010 and worked at the highly lauded Hans Weisshar Workshop as a senior restorer, training directly with Georg Ettinger. His tenure there provided him the opportunity to work with musicians in many of the country’s top orchestras as well as hands-on training and experience restoring historically important instruments. In Kyu joined the Carriage House Violins workshop in October of 2015. His incredible wealth of knowledge and status as such a skilled expert lead to his promotion to head restorer in June of 2018.

In Kyu lives in Newton with his wife and daughter. He is fluent in Korean, German, and English and enjoys rock climbing in his spare time.
