Eight Pieces, Op.83 for Clarinet (or Violin), Viola (or Cello), and Piano by Max Bruch

Urtext edition by Annette Oppermann. Published by Henle

Max Bruch (1838-1920) was a German romantic composer who wrote in the conservative tradition of Mendelssohn and Brahms. He had a strong sense of form and a special gift for lush, expressive melodic writing. Though he wrote over 200 works, he is almost exclusively known for three works: his Violin Concerto No. 1 in G minor, the ''Scottish Fantasy'' for violin and orchestra, and ''Kol Nidrei'' for cello and orchestra.

Like his Double Concerto, Bruch's Eight Pieces, Op.83 are late works (1910) that highlight the unusual solo combination of clarinet and viola. He conceived the group as a collection of delightful salon pieces rather than a cycle, so he leaves it to the performers to choose which pieces they play. He also authorized numerous instrument combinations to give performing piano trios maximum flexibility. These gorgeous, lyrical, autumnal pieces are presented in this Henle urtext edition with parts for clarinet in A and B-flat, violin, viola, cello, and piano score. Advanced level, Grade 5.
