Suite for Cello and Piano, Op.16 by Camille Saint-Saens

Published by Schott. Edited by Maria Kliegel

Camille Saint-Saens (1835-1921) was the preeminent French composer of his day--perhaps even of the Romantic Era. He revered form and craft, finding inspiration in the music of the past--yet was known for his melodic gift, invention, and harmonic adventurousness. He made important contributions to several forms, particularly for string-players.

His classically-styled Suite for Cello and Piano, Op.16 (1866) is often overlooked in his catalog; indeed, it predates the major successes of his career, including the cello concertos, and suffered from conflicts from his publisher. But it is evident that Saint-Saens thought highly of the music, going on to rearrange it for different groups as late as 1919. It is a substantial and gratifying work for the cellist with all of the hallmarks that make his music attractive to string players, such that it has been championed by cellists such as Steven Isserlis as an underrated masterpiece. This edition presents the original 1866 version of the work. For intermediate-advanced players. Includes cello and piano parts.
