Suite Populaire Espagnole, for cello and piano by Manuel de Falla

Manuel de Falla (1876-1946) was one of Spain's leading composers in the early 20th-century. He consistently blended the colorful, impressionist styles of his time with evocations of Spain's traditional music. This can be heard in his most popular chamber work, Siete canciones populares espanolas (Seven Spanish Folksongs, 1914) for soprano and piano. He set songs from all across Spain, including an asturiana, seguidilla, and a jota. It speaks to the piece's popularity that, with violinist Paul Kochanski, he arranged them for violin and piano as "Suite populaire espagnole." This in turn was arranged for cello and piano by Maurice Marechal, reprinted in this Max Eschig edition.
