Born in Curitiba, Brazil in 1964, Luiz Amorim studied mechanics with a focus on technical drawing and projects at the Federal Center of Technological Studies. He went on to study the fine arts with a focus on drawing, painting, and sculpture at the State School of Music and Fine Arts, and for ten years, Luiz worked as a professional artist. He began his instrument-making career in 1995 building primarily lyres and kanteles- traditional Finnish and Karelian plucked string instruments belonging to the zither family. Luiz was concurrently learning how to play violin and cello.

In 1998, with a keen desire to enter the classical music scene, Luiz started learning how to make instruments from the violin family. With a sensitive eye to nature's shapes and textures, inspiration from his talented mentors, and the desire to transform materials with his hands, Luiz Amorim built a successful career as a violin maker. In 2001, Luiz established his own workshop where he and his team developed a restoration and violin making program that is admired worldwide. In 2018, he opened the current workshop in Cremona, Italy, where he builds and professional-level instruments in collaboration with his partners. Amorim instruments are played and admired by professional players and collectors from around the globe.
