American luthier Todd Goldenberg began as a guitar maker in Portland, Oregon, before turning to violin making at the renowned firm of Bein & Fushi in Chicago. Goldenberg moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1978, where he studied closely with celebrated maker David Burgess, while working at SHAR music company. Moving to the East Coast in 1988, Goldenberg set up his own workshop in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, regularly traveling to Massachusetts to teach at the North Bennet Street School in Boston, and to build instruments at the violin makers co-operative of the Waltham Mills Artists Association. Since 2003, Goldenberg has built violins, violas, and cellos from his workshop in North Berwick, Maine. Awards for his instruments include a silver medal for cello tone from the Violin Society of America competition of 2006.
